Pine & Gilmore first articulated the idea of Paying Labor in their article titled “Take This Job and Sell It: Charging customers to help stage events”. 

In 2003, Paying Labor positions were first offered at thinkAbout and have since become highly-sought roles for those interested in making the most of their time with Pine & Gilmore before, during, and after the event.
 
This year, Strategic Horizons offers six Paying Labor positions. As such, you’ll pay a premium to work as part of the event staff in Tuesday preparations (and do walkthrough of the Learning Excursion tour route with Pine & Gilmore) before the main event. More importantly, you’ll have rare behind-the-scenes access to Pine & Gilmore – seeing how they think, design, and collaborate – before the full group assembles. In addition, you’ll share a summary of your experiences via an e-mail to Pine & Gilmore with your personal impressions of Paying Labor and detailed feedback including expectations, lessons learned, and suggestions.
